Multicultural issues in audiology; the very concept may seem strange. Some argue that there are no multicultural issues in audiology. Aren’t we all the same? Isn’t an ear an ear?
Others may agree that there are multicultural issues in audiology however they oversimplify impact by focusing on statements such as:
  • Native Americans have a higher incidence of otitis media.

  • Elderly members of some African tribes have no hearing loss so presbycusis is not solely due to aging.

  • Some hearing aids come in different colors.

While these statements have some merit, there is much more to understanding and responding to the importance, complexity, and overall impact of multicultural issues—issues that involve the influence of race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and disability on audiologic and aural rehabilitation concerns.
