The following message was written for this joint newsletter by Coordinators Craig A. Champlin (Division 6), Michael K. Wynne (Division 9, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood), and Jill L. Elfenbein (Division 7, Aural Rehabilitation and Its Instrumentation).
We don’t think you will be surprised that the three of us believe that we live in a complex world of constant change, increasing demands, and decreasing control over many of the facets that affect our daily lives. Today isn’t like yesterday, and tomorrow will likely be different than today. Life, like sound, can be represented like a complex rotating vector; it seems to go around and around the time axis. Life, unlike sound, seems to be rotating around that axis at ever increasing rates which means that, for most of us, it is spinning around pretty darn fast. Although life and sound can be represented as a complex rotating vector, it is not how they go around the axis that matters to us. Rather, it is how that vector is perceived in context that makes all the difference in the world.
